I've moved from the $6/mo VPS to a $3/mo one that works a million times better. Go figure.

Yeah after a thorough investigation I think the problem is that this VPS host is under too heavy of use. It works fine on a different one.

I've got an install on another machine working...hopefully I can replicate on this one (the other machine isn't powerful enough for actual use).
